Rankine’s theory calculates lateral earth pressure solely based on friction angle, assuming the wall is smooth.

Coulomb’s theory allows rough wall and sloping wall back face.

To apply these theories, soil is assumed isotropic and homogeneous, while soil mass failure is assumed a plane strain problem.
