Retaining Structures-Cohesion

Cohesion is favourable as it holds the soil together and reduces, if not preventing the yielding of soil mass.

Tension crack may occur, and this is favourable for structure too.

However, cohesionless backfill i.e. sand is often used rather than clay to avoid swell and shrink that produce excessive pressure.
