Retaining Structures-Pressure Due to Vertical Load

Lateral earth pressure is mainly contributed by soil self-weight.

The higher the soil retained, the greater the pressure.

When dealing with multi-layer stratum, total weight of upper layers act as surcharge on lower layer.

Surcharge is usually constant, thus the pressure it induces remain constant regardless the retained soil height.
