When performing deep, narrow excavation, sheet piles are driven and struts are installed in stages throughout the excavation.

The soil behaves differently with these struts, and thus Rankine’s theory is applicable.

For design purpose, conservative pressure distribution that envelopes the result from actual measurements is assumed.
