Force method is used to solve for a statically indeterminate beam. Before using this method, the degree of indeterminacy needs to be calculated. Then, for each degree of indeterminacy, we make one of the excessive reaction redundant.
In this example, we encounter a propped cantilever which has one degree of indeterminacy. After making one of its reaction redundant, we establish two analysis cases and a primary structure, which resembles the structure after we remove the redundant reaction from actual structure. The first case applies original loading on primary structure, while the second case applies redundant reaction as external load on it.
For each analysis case, we determine beam deflection at the point of redundant reaction. Then, we relate both cases using a compatibility equation, which will then help us to determine the redundant reaction force.
The following introduces the statically indeterminate beam solution using force method. Watch the video above for full details.
