A box girder section is similar to voided slab deck, but the voids in box girder occupy larger space.
Nonetheless, box
girders can be used for bridge span ranging from 30m to 50m.
Box girders can
suit the curvature as per the roadway design, and this contributes to the
preference over beam and slab bridge in term of aesthetics.
During in situ
casting, diaphragms are provided at support locations and along the span at
certain spacing, improve the girder section stiffness and distribute the load
throughout the webs.
Access hole of
minimum 600mm diameter to the box cell is commonly provided around abutment.
The deck depth
should be at least 1200mm to 1800mm, with the preferred span-to-depth ratio of
18:1 to 25:1 for span length greater than 30m.
