Bridge-Bearings

Bearings are provided beneath the bridge deck to allow deck movement in controlled fashion, and subsequently reduce the development of force in supporting elements or substructure.

Elastomeric bearing consists of alternating layers of steel shims and rubber, and it remains an economic solution for deck movement isolation.

Pot bearing consists of confined disk of elastomer inside a cylindrical pot. It usually allows rotation while restraining the translational movement. However, translational fixity can be released by allowing the bearing to move in the intended direction via provision of guides.

Rocker bearing allows rotation about only the axis that is transverse to the girder alignment. It is usually used for bridges with high impact load.
