Traditionally, loadings and long-term effects are separately defined to determine longitudinal and transverse design. In relation to this, grillage model is commonly used.
Grillage model
consists of longitudinal and transverse elements.
Longitudinal
element represents individual beam, and deck slab within its coverage.
Transverse member on the other hand, representing the intermediate and end
diaphragms.
Shear force and
bending moment in each member are extracted and serve as the basis for member
design.
