Bridge-Prestress Forces and Losses

Friction between the tendons and duct developed along its length and this causes the loss in tendon force.

Other contributing factors in losses include lock-off, elastic shortening, creep and shrinkage of concrete, and relaxation of tendon.

Tendons are usually stressed up to 75% to 80% of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) after being released by jack.

Force in post-tensioning tendon can achieve a maximum of 70% UTS, while that for pre-tensioning tendon is 75%.
