Consolidation of soil can be predicted based on the result of oedometer tests on soil specimens.
To implement the oedometer
test result, Skempton and Bjerrum (1957) proposed a simplification in
calculating the consolidation settlement of soil by neglecting the effect of
lateral strain. However, error of up to 20% may occur.
This is due to the
use of confining ring, where the net lateral strain is controlled to be zero.
This condition is only suitable for simulating thin soil layer under large loading
area. In most case, significant lateral strain occurs.
