Foundation-Soil Stress Under Rectangular Area with Uniform Pressure

When determining the soil stress under a rectangular area subjected to uniform pressure, Fadum’s chart is commonly used.

To use the chart, we first need to express the breadth and length of the footing in multiples of the depth where the amount of stress is concerned. Both coefficients m and n are interchangeable.

The result obtain from Fadum’s chart indicates the soil stress level below the four corners of the footing. Superposition method may be used to allow the flexibility to determine that for other points.

This method is applicable to strip area with infinite length as well as square area where n is equals to m.
