MDOF-Modes of Vibration

The natural frequency of a dynamic system can be determined by assuming free vibration of an undamped system case, and it is applicable to both SDOF and MDOF system.

For MDOF system with n-degree of freedom, there will be n-number of deformation pattern, namely mode of vibration. Each of these modes of vibration has its own natural frequency. Among all the vibration modes, a designer concerns more on the fundamental mode. This is the mode where all the degrees of freedom are displacing toward the same direction, causes the system to exhibit the greatest peak displacement. This is the most adverse scenario where the risk of structural failure is the highest. Fundamental mode is associated with the lowest natural frequency, and the highest period of vibration.

The following shows an example of determining the modes of vibration. Watch the video above for full details.
