Structural Design Requirements
The design working life of structure varies with its intended function. Throughout the lifespan, the structure should remain fit under the effect of all possible actions acting on it.
To achieve this, the structural elements should be designed to possess adequate resistance, even under adverse conditions such as fire. On top of that, they also require sufficient serviceability and durability. Under impact, no damage should occur on the elements.
This requires efforts starting from the planning stage. The form of structure should be insensitive to the possible hazards. Even if the damage occurs, the entire system should be able to work adequately despite of losing some individual members.
The structure should withstand long term deterioration without affecting its performance.
