Partial Factor Method of Verification

In structural analysis and design, the design value should be obtained by applying partial factor to the characteristics value.

First, the action applied to the structure should be factored to take the most critical situation into account.

The effect of action, such as internal forces and deformations are determined in the same way, for the same purpose.

The material properties and geometry of structural elements are usually made unfavourable, to include the effect of deviation from the characteristics value. Lastly, the calculated structural resistance is divided by appropriate partial factor. By doing so, the design becomes more conservative and safer.
