Ultimate Limit State
Ultimate limit state focuses on the safety of structure and its occupants.
There are four ultimate limit states that shall be verified.
EQU, denotes the condition where the structure or any part of it loses the static equilibrium. STR assesses the condition where internal failure or excessive deformation occur in structural members. GEO concerns on the failure or excessive ground deformation. FAT on the other hand, focuses on structural failure due to fatigue.
To establish these ultimate limit states, partial factor of safety is applied to the actions on structure. The use of such factor is depending on whether a loading is favourable or unfavourable, as well as whether it is predominant when we are dealing with imposed load.
