Manometer is a device that measures liquid pressure based on the height of the liquid column. It can be categorized as simple and differential manometer.
A simple manometer is used to measure the gauge pressure at any point inside the liquid. It usually has one of its glass tube open to the atmosphere. Three common types of simple manometer are piezometer, U-tube manometer and single column manometer.
As for differential manometer, it is used to measure the pressure difference between two gauge points. Thus, both ends of its glass tube should be connected to the liquid. Some types of differential manometer are inverted U-tube and U-tube differential manometer, as well as micromanometer.
Sometimes, another type of liquid should be filled inside the manometer to ensure the device is functioning as intended. Such liquid is known as manometric liquid, and it should be a type of liquid that does not mix with the measured liquid upon contact.
The following show the ways to read various types of manometers. Watch the video above for full details.
