Serviceability Limit State

Serviceability limit state concerns the appearance of building, comfort level of occupants and the functionality of structure or its members.

For appearance, deflection is often investigated. Based on the type of structure, some specific criteria are established for structural element to comply with the appearance requirement, such as cracking.

Human comfort level in a structure is related to the vibration of structure. Such vibration usually occurs as structure responds to dynamic loading.

Damage of structural element will affect the functionality of building. On top of that, when excessive deformation occurs, non-structural components such as finishes may be damaged, and this may affect the functionality of building.

To verify the serviceability limit states, three types of action combinations are provided, namely characteristics, frequent and quasi-permanent.
