Construction Material: Reinforcing Steel

Reinforcing steel, also known as rebar, is used together with concrete to form reinforced concrete structures. In opposed to concrete, rebar is excellent in resisting tension force. Thus, it is essential at the tension face of an element under bending moment.

The yield strength of rebar is concerned during the structural design stage. On top of that, the rebar shall comply with the requirements on tensile strength to yield strength ratio, and elongation at maximum force. These requirements ensure the rebar possesses enough ductility. The stress-strain relationship of rebar can be simplified into a bilinear curve.

In industry, rebar often takes the form of loose bar and welded wire mesh.
