Foundation-Raft Design

A raft foundation may be subjected to horizontal load and moment in addition to vertical load. These loadings are usually induced by wind.

Where the effect of lateral load is significant, the following limit states need to be adhered:

1. The vertical action on raft foundation should not exceed the bearing resistance of supporting soil.

2. The horizontal action on the raft foundation should not exceed the sliding resistance at the base-soil interface.

3. The applied moment should not cause the overturning of the structure.

The movement of foundation under these actions should not cause the structure to lose its functionality.
