The catchment of a stream is defined by as the area of land draining into it. To calculate the change in water storage within a catchment, water-budget equation may be used.
The inflow of water is contributed by precipitation. Meanwhile, the outflow of water from the catchment is contributed via runoff, evaporation and transpiration. Some groundwater may flow out of the catchment due to various reasons, and this should be considered when calculating the change in water storage within a catchment.
The change in water storage is generally the inflow volume of water into catchment minus the outflow volume of water from the catchment. In calculation, these volumes are often expressed as the average depth over the catchment area.
