Concrete Cover
Concrete cover is measured from the surface of concrete to the nearest surface of steel bar, which includes longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. Cover is provided to protect steel reinforcement from corrosion and fire. Moreover, sufficient cover will ensure safe transfer of bond forces in reinforcement.
To fulfil bond requirement, the cover provided must be greater than the steel bar diameter. Adjustment should be made based on maximum aggregate size used in concrete mix.
To ensure the member has enough durability, another set of minimum cover requirement is obtained by assessing its exposure class. Based on the desired structural fire resistance, we will obtain another requirement for cover.
Nominal concrete cover is obtained by adding allowance for deviation to the concrete cover value that fulfils all the requirements.
