Continuous Beam Analysis (BS8110)

For continuous beam with approximately equal spans, simplified method may be used to determine design shear force and bending moment.

This method is stipulated in clause 3.4.3, BS8110 Part 1: 1997. To use this method, the minimum span length should be at least 85% of the longest span length. On top of that, applied live load on the spans should not be greater than dead load. All the loadings are equally, uniformly distributed over three or more spans.

A continuous beam can be segmentized into five parts. At outermost support, bending moment is zero. At the midspan, sagging moment is developed while shear force is neglected. Hogging moment is developed on all interior supports, alongside the shear force.
