Construction Materials-Aggregate Specific Gravity

Knowing the aggregate weight at certain moisture level, we can proceed to determine its specific gravities.

Specific gravity is the ratio of sample’s density to water density, and we can calculate simply using the weight data.

Apparent specific gravity uses aggregate solid mass and volume without permeable pores and voids.

Bulk specific gravity is the ratio of mass of a unit volume of aggregate including pores and voids to the mass of water.

Bulk specific gravity can be determined for saturated surface dry condition too.
