Gravity Sewer Pipe Capacity
In gravity sewer design, we determine the pipe material based on the proposed diameter.
Full-bore velocity through a pipe section can be determined using three different equations, namely Colebrook-White equation, Hazen-Williams equation and Manning’s equation.
The procedure to determine the velocity is similar for all of them. First, we need to determine method-specific coefficient based on pipe material and condition. Then, this coefficient and design inputs such as pipe geometry and pipe gradient are substituted into the equation.
With full-bore velocity, we can determine the pipe capacity by multiplying it with cross-sectional area of pipe.
When designing sewer pipe, the velocity should be controlled within 0.8m/s to 4m/s.
