Sewage Influent and Effluent

The quality of sewage is described using parameters reflecting the content of pollutants.

These pollutants are BOD, suspended solids, COD, nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, phosphorus, oil and grease.

Prior to treatment, the pollutants content in sewage influent is calculated based on the total sewage volume under average flow condition.

The purpose of sewage treatment is to reduce the content of pollutants to acceptable level. Based on the discharge location, the effluent needs to comply with different criteria.

Effluent should fulfil standard A criteria when the discharge point from treatment plant is at the upstream of any raw water intake point. Conversely, it needs to comply with standard B.
The criteria for standard A and B vary with the types of water body receiving the effluent discharge.
