Grit and Grease Removal
Primary treatment is conducted prior to secondary biological treatment. In this process, grit and grease are removed. It is essential as the subsequent biological treatment is not meant to treat the grit and grease. Moreover, they may damage the machines and hinder the treatment process.
Grit or discrete particles that possess greater density than putrescible solids, are usually removed by the mean of settling. The length to width ratio of grit chamber is taken as 2 to 1, to allow the grit to settle thoroughly.
On the other hand, grease often possess lower density than putrescible solids. Therefore, the removal of grease is done simply by skimming the surface of black water. The grease skimming device should minimize the removal of water.
