Aeration Tank

After denitrification process, the concentration of nitrates in mixed liquor has been reduced and the bacteria are lack of the source of oxygen. This is when aeration process takes place, where oxygen is added to the mixed liquor and diffused through mixing. Contrary to the condition in anoxic tank, high concentration of dissolved oxygen, for instance greater than 2mg/L is needed for bacteria to perform biodegradation.

This process targets organic matters, where the bacteria feed on organic matters and subsequently reduces its concentration in wastewater. Through the process, carbon released from the degradation of organic matters. Eventually, carbon dioxide is formed and released to air. The bacteria form flocks and settle to the bottom of tank. This is when they are recirculated back to anoxic tank.
