Creep is the time-dependent increase in concrete strain due to stresses. It can occur under all types of loading, namely compression, tension and torsion.
When a concrete element is loaded continuously, rather than exhibiting elastic deformation, the element experiences increase in deformation with time.
Upon unloading,
the element may recover, but it is unlikely for it to recover fully and back to
its original shape. The portion of creep deformation that can be recovered is
known as reversible creep, while the permanent creep deformation would be
irreversible.
Usually, around
50% of one year creep happens in the first 3 to 4 weeks after the loading.
