Sand Drying Bed
The treated sludge can be disposed directly from sludge holding tank as wet sludge. Alternatively, it can be disposed as dry sludge, which is a more economical solution.
The sludge is first transferred to sand drying bed. The drying bed consists of 2 sand layers. The thickness of coarse sand layer is 200mm, and it consists of sand particle sized between 2mm and 4.7mm. Aggregates graded from 28mm to 40mm make up another layer of 300mm thickness.
The treated sludge is fed continuously to the bed for the first 7 days, and then minimum 21 days of waiting period is required before next sludge feed. Sand drying beds area can be reduced if they are fully covered.
