There are two types of concrete masonry units, namely concrete building brick and load-bearing unit.
These masonry
units are manufactured in either normal-weight, medium weight or lightweight
classes.
The density of
normal weight unit is over 2000kg per cubic meter. It consists of well-graded
sand, gravel and crushed stone.
For lightweight unit,
its density lies between 1360 and 1680 kg per cubic meter. To achieve this,
lightweight aggregates such as pumice, cinders and scoria are used.
To manufacture a concrete
masonry unit, type I cement is normally used. However, type III cement is sometimes
used in order to obtain the strength faster.
Whenever type IA and IIIA cement are used, workability and molding characteristics of the mix is expected to be improved. The drawback is the reduction in terms of compressive strength.
