There are several types of joints that can be formed after the stiffening of mortar.
A concave joint is
the best weathertight joint. Special tool is used to form this type of joint.
Flush joints form
a smooth masonry wall, and prepare it for subsequent plastering or painting
work.
Vee joints protect
the wall against penetration of water into the wall by preventing water accumulation
around the joint.
Struck joints are suitable
for interior walls as they tend to retain the water.
Weathered joints
on the other hand, allows water to shed from it.
Due to the presence of ledge adjacent to the mortar, raked joints are not suitable for exterior wall.
