Mortar is a plastic mixture of cement, lime, sand and water.
The cement used in
the production of mortar is also known as masonry cement.
It is a hydraulic
cement that consists of one or the combination of the following:
- Portland cement
- Portland-pozzolan cement
- Natural cement
- Slag cement
- Portland-blast furnace slag cement
- Hydraulic lime
The function of mortar is to bond individual masonry units and form a large single unit. It is also the bedding material to allow the masonry units to be placed on a levelled surface. This bedding can distribute pressure uniformly over the surface.
There are four grades of mortar, namely M, S, N and O. Each of these grades possess different proportion and property specifications.
