Hardwood and Softwood

Wood can be broadly categorized into two types, namely hardwood and softwood.

Hardwoods are deciduous trees with broad leaves, and have their leaves shed during the winter.

Softwoods are conifers with needlelike leaves. Unlike hardwoods, softwoods are generally evergreen.

Wood may exhibit different mechanical properties, not only from species to species, but also within the same species. This is due to the potential difference in terms of their growth conditions and environment.

Other than the above classification, we may also include several species with similar properties into one species group.
