Problem

Determine structural steel section that meant to resist 46.5kNm bending moment about its minor axis and 25kN of shear force. Use steel grade S355.

Solution

1. Select a structural steel section.
2. Determine the section class by referring to cl.3.5.2, BS5950-1:2000.
3. Calculate the axial resistance of the section by referring to cl.4.8.3.2, BS5950-1:2000.
4. Determine the moment resistance by referring to cl.4.2.5, BS5950-1:2000.
5. Determine the shear resistance by referring to cl.4.2.3, BS5950-1:2000.
6. Calculate the capacity ratio as per cl.4.8.3.2, BS5950-1:2000.
