Problem

Determine structural steel column carrying 218kN of axial load and 80kN of reaction from two adjacent beams. Use steel grade S355 and let beam reaction eccentricity be 100mm.

Solution

  1. Select a structural steel section.
  2. Determine the segment length of bending about both major and minor axes.
  3. Calculate the effective length based on the column end conditions, as per cl.4.7.3 & Table 22, BS5950-1:2000.
  4. Calculate the bending moment induced by beam reaction and its eccentricity, about both major and minor axes of column section.
  5. Determine the section class by referring to cl.3.5.2, BS5950-1:2000.
  6. Calculate the slenderness ratio of compression member as per cl.4.7.2, BS5950-1:2000.
  7. Determine strut curve based on the type of structural steel section, by referring to Table 23.
  8. Determine the compressive strength of section based on Table 24.
  9. Calculate the compression resistance (buckling) of the section by referring to cl.4.7.4, BS5950-1:2000.
  10. Determine the slenderness ratio using column effective length and section's radius of gyration about minor axis, based on cl.4.3.6.7, BS5950-1:2000.
  11. Calculate slenderness factor by using the formulation provided in cl.4.3.6.7, BS5950-1:2000.
  12. Determine equivalent slenderness as per cl.4.3.6.7, BS5950-1:2000.
  13. Determine the bending strength of section by referring to Table 16, BS5950-1:2000.
  14. Calculate the buckling moment resistance of column based on cl.4.3.6.4, BS5950-1:2000.
  15. Calculate the product of yield strength and section modulus about minor axis of column section, as stated in cl.4.7.7, BS5950-1:2000.
  16. Evaluate the column design by using the capacity ratio given in cl.4.7.7, BS5950-1:2000.
